CREW LIST: NURSES


V.A.D.: Voluntary Aid Detachement. Staffed by non-professional nurses with basic training in first-aid and nursing. After October, 1914, all Detachments were supervised by the Joint War Committee (J.W.C.) of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St.John of Jerusalem.

S. M. P.: Special Military Probationers (a.k.a. War Probationers). Non-professional nurses with basic training in first-aid and nursing but directly employed by the War Office after the spring of 1915.

Q.A.I.M.N.S.R.: Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve. Staffed by professional nurses who had joined the war effort from retirement or non-military appointments.

RRC: Royal Red Cross recipient. A Bar to the medal indicates that it has been awarded a second time.
